Frustration lent an edge to his voice that Jared didn’t bother to disguise. Ashley’s repeated second-guessing of his decisions was severely testing his patience.
“Why did you reverse my orders to my men?” He glared at her. Irritation vied with admiration at the way the evening sun blazed on her long wavy hair. He swallowed and ordered his senses to get a grip. “I was hoping to move on to the second floor today, but now we’ll have to backtrack because what you told them to do will have to be undone.”
“Undone?” She frowned at him, her brows pulling together in a line of annoyance. “Why?”
“Because it’s wrong. We need the electrician and the plumber to check everything before that wall goes up. Now I have to waste time undoing what shouldn’t have been done in the first place.” His irritation shriveled when her blue eyes lost their sheen.
“I was only trying to keep them busy,” she murmured. “You weren’t around and they were wasting time.”
“How were they wasting time?” he demanded. He shook his head as she described his men’s actions. “I asked them to do that. For a reason.”
“But—”
“Ashley, did you or did you not hire me to do this job?” he demanded.
“Of course. But I’m in charge of this project and it’s my business to keep everything progressing.” She straightened, lifting her chin to glare at him. Queen Ashley.
“I want the same thing,” he said quietly. “But your micro-managing is slowing things down and that gets worse when you countermand what I say.”
“I never meant to do that,” she said, blue eyes solemn.
“I know you didn’t but the effects are the same.” He decided to be blunt. Maybe then she’d understand. “When you interfere, you challenge my authority with the men and cost us extra money. It has to stop, Ashley. We can’t afford either the time or the money we’re wasting if we’re to finish on schedule.”
“I’m sorry.” She ducked her head.
“I know and I understand, but please, it has to stop.” He pushed his forefinger under her chin and pressed up to get her to look at him. “You’re wearing me out with these constant questions about what I’m doing. Don’t you trust me to do this job? Are you having second thoughts about offering me the position of foreman?”
“Doubts? About you?” She frowned, but it took a moment before she shook her head. “No.”
“Then let me do the job, okay?” Jared noted that Ashley hadn’t said she trusted him but he didn’t have time to puzzle that out now. “I promise I will tell you if a problem arises, or if we need to change something. But unless I do, what we really need is to focus on the job and get it done without interference.”
“And the little house?” Her eyes never left his face, but she nibbled on her bottom lip as she watched him.
“We’ll get there, Ashley,” he promised. “We will get your dream home finished.”
“Just not yet.” She sighed. “Okay. I promise that I’ll come to you with all my questions from now on.
